Handstand

Handstand is a quite special pose. Challenging and scary. And practically it is completely useless.

Yet it is beneficial and deeply fascinating for a surprisingly large number of people. Not just athletes, gymnasts and fitness freaks. Normal people that you would not expect it from.

I think this is not just because it is cool to be able to stand on ones hands, but it is a very empowering and transformative experience to carry the world on your hands.

Upcoming classes and events

Currently I offer a regular online handstand class every second Wednesday at 6pm CET (see below). The weeks in between we also meet online for a free community training (also online via Zoom). Everyone can contribute by suggesting/instructing exercises or topics for the group to research and play with. If you are interested join our Signal group or shoot me a message.

On-demand course

I am currently working on an video-on-demand (VOD) handstand course. Please send me a message if you are interested in it, to get a discounted price offer once it is finished.

If there is some specific topic you would like a separate video or class about, please also send me a message and I’ll see what I can do.

Motivation to practice handstand

Perspectives and emotions

Turning the world literally upside down is a drastic change of perspective. A chance to discover eye-opening insights about how we view the world and our self. It can bring up all sorts of insights and emotions from highs of excitement and bursting joy all the way to fears and frustration. Since the handstand is not at all important for our survival, this is a great playground to become aware of and re-engineer our patterns and narratives.

Confidence and freedom

Any time we dare to go places we normally don’t go, or even to the edge of our comfort zone we grow in freedom and empowerment.
By training our body for mobility, strength and coordination, by getting used to carrying our bodyweight on hands, we develop confidence in our physical capabilities and trust in our body.

Posture

Handstand allows us to explore our posture and spatial awareness in a completely different way as our alignment in gravity is inverted. We develop proprioception and a elaborate sense of how we stack our body parts for efficiency and ease. This understanding can then be transferred also into our normal upside-up.

Balance

Balance is not a state, it is a process. A continuous movement of recovery. Oscillating around a center. The larger the movement, the harder to recover. With time we learn to compensate faster and sooner, with less and less effort. We move towards stillness and harmony.

FlyingMonkey style

Though nailing the handstand is a clear objective, my approach to movement practice is generally not goal or performance oriented. I move to develop body awareness, physical proficiency, freedom and well-being. My classes are designed to cultivate the “playful explorer mindset” for a joyful, healthy practice. Guided by curiosity and enthusiasm we investigate diversity, connect with intuition, dive into flow and arrive in aware presence.

Prerequisites

Of course handstand requires a certain physical precondition but it is way more accessible than most people think. There is no restriction on age or physical fitness. As long as you have healthy joints and are willing to learn, you are perfectly able to give it a try.

Contraindications

It is not recommended to do inversion poses if you have high blood pressure or glaucoma / other eye problems. Of course this list does not claim to be complete. There are certainly other conditions in which it may not be advisable to do inversions. Please act wisely and with discernment. You are always responsible for your own heath!
